The Legacy & The Return

This landscape was first homesteaded by Susan Schreiber’s grandfather Lester Schreiber in 1927. For decades, the acreage evolved through the traditional paths of the region. A permanent paradigm shift for the family legacy began when Susan and her husband, Stu McFarland, returned to these drylands to direct the operation as active owner-managers.

Today, we find it both challenging and deeply rewarding to build upon that century of ancestral work. We honor our history by transforming these 6,000 acres into a transparent model for self-sustaining, innovative agriculture.

From Synthetic Masks to Expressive Biology.

Our management philosophy changed permanently the moment we began looking at the farm as a biological system. Inspired by Allan Savory’s principles of Holistic Management, we analyzed the historic bison herds of the Great Plains, recognizing that fundamental ecological principles do not alter with land use. We realized that standard agricultural practices often turn crops into lazy organisms artificially sustained by heavy chemical applications.


We chose a truer path, drawing from permaculture principles thoughtfully adapted to a commercial scale. We ignore rigid labels and industry pigeonholes to focus on what actually works for our specific environment. We manage for an ecosystem that is feral, expressive, and biologically independent.

Our transparent management practices and our real soil outcomes serve as our true validation. We adapt our practices entirely to what the land requires, independent of arbitrary third-party checklists or trendy marketing labels.


We verify our work with empirical data. Every single one of our 6,000 acres earns a documented 4 to 5 star rating under the state STAR program. This continuous resource tracking provides our commercial partners with verified proof of active ecological function.
